What is green romaine lettuce?

Romaine lettuce is a type of lettuce that grows in a head of sturdy leaves with a firm rib down the middle of each leaf. This is one of the reasons why romaine is such a popular salad vegetable- it’s firm rib gives it a certain crunchy texture other leaves such as butterhead lettuce do not have. The crisp and juicy romaine lettuce is certainly a favorite in the classic caesar salad when it is paired with a creamy anchovy sauce, equally crunchy croutons, and even parma ham in certain salads.

When romaine is cooked instead of being served raw, the thick ribs, especially those of the older leaves, should produce a milky fluid that gives the lettuce its signature bitter taste. Romaine is sometimes used during the Passover Seder as a bitter herb to symbolise the bitterness of the Egyptians on the Israelites when they were used as slaves in Egypt.

Romaine has many health benefits such as its abundance of vitamins and minerals. Vitamins such as vitamin A can help prevent eye conditions such as cataract as people age.
